PRAIRIECARE
The place of the PAIN and the SUFFERING.
This info applies to both inpatient and PHP. Possibly IOP as well.
WARNING: IF POSSIBLE PICK ANY OTHER PROGRAM THAN PRAIRIECARE. SERIOUSLY.
This page exists because I went through PrairieCare's PHP and inpatient programs, and I wish
someone had told me what to actually expect. You need to know what you're walking into. This is
not medical advice. This is one person's hard-earned experience.
WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU
- Group therapy quality varies wildly depending on who's running it. Some days are fine, other
days are absolute chaos.
- Your assigned therapist may not be a good fit. You have limited ability to change this, so you
might be stuck.
- Accommodations you request may be denied with little explanation. Your concerns may not matter
to them.
- You have virtually no rights as a patient. Let that sink in.
WHAT ACTUALLY HELPED
- Finding the staff members who genuinely gave a damn. There are few of them, but they exist. They
are the lifeline.
- Connecting with other patients. The peer support is real and invaluable, even if it's
unofficial. They understand in a way no therapist can.
- Knowing your rights before you walk in. Knowledge is power. Use it.
